 Well, I just installed xdebug and launched its profiler along with
 WinCacheGrind (that's a Win dev machine). Apparantly I couldn't recreate
 the problem on the Win machine BUT as you can see from the screen captures
 attached, the function _setLastElement takes half the time without the
 is_array() check.
 Please mind that I've restarted the server and cleaned the cache before
 launching each of the 4 tests.

 Can't this call (and possibly other wasteful calls in the hydration loop)
 be spared by using static variables? IMHO (from the user's side) the
 hydration loop isn't as robust as the dev team imagines.
