We don't use Email Defense. But we have our own spam filter and I also use that
of Google and another commercial one and unfortunately all of them had a
decline in effectiveness over the last year or so. Our own spam filter now uses
*much* more resources than before only to achieve an acceptable but not really
good result. What surprises me a bit is that Google isn't any more effective
than the others despite the huge user feedback they can collect.

Another problem we see is that effectiveness varies extremely between different
domains and users. So some of your customers are probably very happy and others
not at all. I find it rather difficult to measure the overall effectiveness of
a spam filter because you've got to look at averages and at least also at mean
deviations over mail accounts and domains. What a world of pain...

Just to give another data point: We see a spam/ham ratio of approximately 10
which makes even a few percent of missed spam a real problem.

This probably wasn't very helpful to you guys, but as I'm looking into
different solutions now and then I thought to share my experience.

Good luck to you all.

Arthur
