Unfortunately, some 60% of all radio outlets (AKA stations) are owned by a small group of consortiums. They have figured out certain formats and will not break them until they lose listenership in a big way. Letter writing may help, but I heard of something the other day that may break radio, and hence our cause, wide open. Digital Satellite Radio premiered at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. There are only two vendors, XFM and Serious (sp.), and their pitch is flawless, commercial-free, music for a fee (9.95/month). Since it is satellite-based, users would never drive out of range or receive a substandard signal. Both vendors have signed agreements with major auto manufacturers to provide capable units. Each system has  100 channels and may be flexible to including input from potential customers with fresh, new ideas. You can listen to the NPR report at:

This requires RealPlayer. Perhaps a little input from potential subscribers could help.

(Al waxes on past times) I remember with great fondness K94, WMYK, from deep in the heart of the Great Dismal Swamp. The soggy ground the transmitter was on gave them a great ground-plane and they really put out. 94.7 had the original FM format and played it up until it was bought out in the early eighties. They would play at least 5 songs in a row, frequently album sides, and would never stomp on the music. The announcer did all the commercials in his/her mature, soothing voice, which were concentrated, measured, and provided excellent return for advertising dollar according to places like The Cave, Brew-Thru, and Mothers. K94 dominated the Tidewater Virginia and Northeast North Carolina market from about 1970 until the buyout by a soul station. Demographics must have changed. Not enough old hippies I suppose. Anyway, they were big Doobie fans in more ways than one ;-> and promo'd all Doobie shows in the area. It was really great to drive up to Norfolk or Hampton Roads listening to the Brothers, see the show, then have K94 broadcast Doobies all the way home with current and deep-cut music. For some reason, I regularly took wrong turns heading back south after the show and wound up, invariably, at the base of their mighty tower (of power). Naturally this would prompt a party then and there. Picture a car with windows down, radio up, and a bunch of people dancing in the moonlight, groovin on the best music known to man, or woman for that matter.

Or encourage classic rock stations or easy listening stations to have a
Sunday afternoon format of a group with history, interviews and playing their
former hits as an intro to playing their current CD.

The problem with classic rock, oldies but goodies etc stations is that they
KEEP THE BANDS FROZEN IN THE PAST and do not acknowledge current events,
tunes or success after the end date of records they play.  Even the bio shows
they have for a group usually is history only, not giving any or much air
time on current activities or releases.

That's the problem with the critics down playing the SR CD, they are judging
the Doobies on what was _+_+_+ years ago, or when Michael McD was with them
to what is now; instead of judging the CD for it's own merits.  The band
ain't gonna sound like it was when different people were in it as vocals but
that doesn't mean they aren't as good or better than that now!!!!!

Either get me off this soapbox or get this headache out of my face!!  Either
way, I'm sure I'll sound off another time later......
