Answering myself...
I tried restoring from the backup taken last Thursday; no change.
However, it did say that it couldn't restore /home/snap/common, even
though those files are all writeable for me.
Also tried running Chromium from a newly created user's desktop; no change.

There was no directory called /home/terry/snap/chromium/3245/ in the
backup. The other numbered directories are empty on this machine, but
do contain files in the backup. However, those files don't seem to be
restored, and I get the following errors:
