I'm not sure how involved the scripts are, but the check for an updated
version was at one point (maybe still is) done by querying the web cvs
interface.

But, on a positive note, the command line svn client can be used to query
the repository for an XML-formatted response.

I really don't think anyone will regret moving to Subversion even if it
requires some script changes.
