  The reduction drive is crimped together and tough to do much with unless you 
remove it and clean it with solvent. Its tough getting grease back into it as 
well. I have taken a few of them apart and repaired a few that were worn out. I 
use lithium grease but is not critical. If you prefer not to do surgery on it 
just apply some light oil around the ball bearing and work it back and forth, 
sometimes that will soften the old grease. The other issue is the sticky grease 
on the shaft itself, this is usually were friction comes from. Sit the R-4A 
upright, remove the preselector knob, and let some light oil work its way down 
the shaft.
