Hi Michal! I'm also playing around with the r200-branch at the moment, and I've got better results than you (I tried both jose's snapshots and building from cvs). X starts up fine for me, and 3D also works to some extent (glxgears, glx-screensavers work for example, but q3a, wolf and so on crash after a few minutes of playing). I still got some trouble with Xv, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but that's another story... Other than that I haven't experienced any 2D errors.
Did you take a look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log, maybe it gives you any interesting information why the server won't start (or why it blanks your screen) You could also try to checkout and compile the current cvs rather than using the binary snapshots, maybe that makes a difference. Also, what hardware are you using (mainboard chipset, model of the card, cpu ...)? Maybe the current driver works better on some chipsets than on others?
