The human eye cant do better than 9bpp, and thats in its most sensitive
colour, green.

8,9,8bpp modes would be as good as is ever required.

Every time I hear someone that's "in to" graphics say this, I want to scream. Go ask John Carmack or Tim Sweeny if having more than 8-bits per channel is useful. 64-bpp or 128-bpp isn't useful for display, but is useful.
