Just a heads-up regarding non-power of two (NPOT) textures.
An ARB extension for NPOT 1D, 2D, 3D and cube textures is coming. Parameterized texture coordinates (i.e. [0,1] range) will be used, rather than [0,w]x[0,h] like GL_NV_texture_rectangle.
I'll probably implement this feature in core Mesa in the not too distant future.
