Sorry, thought I covered all the bases providing info. I tried 4 different
AC adapters and as I mentioned in the third paragraph I used a battery I
know is in good condition (or maybe you thought I was talking about the PRAM
battery?).

So, a good battery, a good PRAM battery, a good AC adapter, I did rest the
power manager on each (several times) and still they only boot while in the
dock.

Are there any terminals that might need cleaning that I can't see?

I know the Dock connects through the PDS slot on the back thus eliminating
the need to use any of the ports (AC, serial, modem etc) so I suppose it
could be some kind of bad connection at the AC adapter.

I dunno...
