Thanks for your response.




Now the problem of slow boot has mysteriously been corrected. I
installed a Farallon Ethernet Card and updated OS 8.5 to 8.6 and it
now boots in less than 1.5 minutes. I still don't have a serial port
but am connected to my network via apple talk using the Ethernet.

I am mystified. Prior to this I had initialized the hard disk, I
tried 8.0, 8.1 8.5 and 9.1 all had the slow boot problem.

If the problem comes back I'll try your approach.

If you know when does the ram check take place, before or after the
welcome box appears, please tall me  .  Yours is the best thesis yet.
Perhaps a flaky ram may have caused the problem. However I recollect
that I had run TechToolŪ Pro 2.5.4 and received no indication of a
RAM defect.
