This is when the Mac is looking to connect to a network. It stalls if
one it expects is not there. This is why I suggested emptying the
"Server" folder, a major source of these stalls, but that is only in Mac
OS 9 and later--you didn't post that you were using 8.5 so I guessed.
Don't remember 8.5 or 8.6 well enough to advise you if it recurs.
The memory check occurs right after the chime and before you see a
splash screen with progress bar. You can turn it off by holding down the
option-apple keys while opening the memory control panel.
