Hi Allison
I used to own PB160 and PB145 both are '030 based. I never owned '030
based Duo, though. I found that system 7.1 is the fastest and slimmest,
but kinda boring. I updated my PB160 with 7.6.1 and it was one of the
most stable Mac I've ever owned. My PB160 has 10MB RAM, a slim 7.6.1
will take about 3.5 MB.
My PB160 ran great, I surfed the web, wrote my thesis, sent emails with
it.
My favorite browser is Netscape 2.02 (I still use it on my 280c and
3400c), it's the fastest Netscape you can find. I didn't have any luck
with iCab, it crashed too often but I've heard many people raved about
it. Don't use Internet Explorer, the earlier version is very buggy.
ClarisWorks 5.0 or earlier also works great on '030 machine (you have to
do custom install, and select only the basic application or else it will
fill up your hard drive easily), or you might try to find Microsoft Word
5.1a, it's fast and compact and still useful IMO. Don't use Word 6.x,
many people actually downgrade to word 5.0 because Word 6.x is way to
slow for older machine. On my PB160, launching Word 6.1 took almost two
minutes!!
As for the email program, I always use Eudora Lite on all of my machine
including my desktop computer (it's free, you can download it from most
shareware/freeware website). It's very compact, fast loading, and I
believe has all the basic that average person needs.
If you have trouble finding those softwares, please let me know, maybe I
can help.
