Your best bet is to use some sort of PCI card solution, though I have never seen
one. This is why I use the 2300. It's slower, but I can import and export
digital audio using a Digidesign Nubus card (and I can only use it while
docked). Otherwise, I can think of no way to use the other existing ports for
audio. You are better off getting an iBook at this point since you will soon be
able to use the USB bus for 24 bit digital audio. Hey, that may be your
solution. I'm sure there are USB PCI card solutions! It'll require purchasing a
USB PCI card and then something like Opcode's upcoming USB Mac audio interface.
I believe that IS your only solution. Much more elegant than a limited sound
only card too. Yeah, 16-bit audio doesn't really do it, especially coming out of
those mini jacks.
Don't know why you're not hearing the noise when going straight to DAT unless
the noise is being amplified via headphones & speakers as a result of the 2400's
D/A, whereas going straight to DAT passes through the DAT's D/A as well (which
is undoubtedly far superior to the 2400's) before you hear it and somehow
reduces the amount of noise transmitted. Heck it may even cancel out the 2400's
noise. I'm not that into the technology of it.
