I'm a member of a media group called The Tape-beatles.

We produced much of our latest CD using my 2400 with an external hard drive.
In fact, I bought the machine specifically for its travel-friendliness. You
see, one of our members lives in Prague, and we decided to produce many of
the tracks there. I had originally planned to ship over my 7300 -- but when
I saw J and R was selling new 2400s for $1500, I ordered one. A little bit
of playing with it made me realize that I could do nearly everything I
needed to do at the time on the 2400, considerably lightening my load.
We don't use anything really high end for software: Deck, SoundHack and
SoundEdit for real basic stuff. I am able to do 12 tracks in Deck of real
time playback nondestructive editing. If I make heavy use of effects, I have
to use fewer tracks. The 2400 handles it all with aplomb. Recognizing that
the noisy headphone jack doesn't really affect the actual sound files means
this isn't much of a limitation. If you're serious about the sound, burn a
cd and listen to it on a good stereo -- you'd do that anyway, right?
I have since sold my 7300 and haven't looked back. I do graphics, too,
however, so I miss having a big millions-of-colors monitor. So if/when
cardbus is enabled, I will get a road rocket and an external monitor, and
then I'll feel like I'll have a complete system.
I feel like for $1500 (plus $109 for a 64mb ram chip) I got an amazing
value.
