My Vimage 320 card also came with that pad, but the Apple 603e 
daughtercard also had a pad of the same size between the CPU and the 
metal plate at the end of the heat pipe.  The plate lines up with the 
CPU of both daughtercards, and I assume this is by design.  Didn't 
your stock 2400 have a similar pad?  The one that came with my Vimage 
was a light green; the one on the Apple was black (or maybe the other 
way around).
