LONG LIVE THE TRACKBALL!!

Now this is what I call the "hard way". The easy way, as Scott mentions
only after having completed major surgery is to simply replace the bottom
case lid of the 2300 with an older Duo lid with the trackball hole. They
are all interchangeable. Then you simply add a trackball in the space
provided in the 2300 case bottom and you can enjoy all of the perks of a
2300 with all of the ease of operation of a 280c and while there is
nothing wrong with the 280c screen, you won't believe how much difference
that extra screen real estate on a 2300 makes (plus you don't have to gut
two Duos in the process). I don't know about the list sponsor, but you can
buy such retrograde kits from Powerbookguy.com that has everything you
need.

Of course the intermediate way to do this (and I know Scott probably
doesn't want to hear this NOW), is to simply disconnect the cables from
the display of both computers and swap the entire case bottoms (and
switching back the trackball/trackpad & case tops), thereby eliminating
any "gutting" or complex take apart required in his original method. But
then you loose the larger screen size.

As far as the trackpad goes, while I don't prefer it, it can do some
pretty neat things like "tap lock" which is like holding the clicker down
on the mouse. OS 8 pretty much compensated for this by adding sticky
menus, however. But "drag lock" is another feature that is really nice
that is not duplicated elsewhere, you highlight an item by tapping and
then drag it wherever you want without holding down anything else and tap
to release. Desktop mice really should do this too.

Get your 2300, try the trackpad yourself for a while to see which you like
better, always knowing in the back of you mind you can easily replace it
with a trackball.
