Hi,
If you want this same functionality with the trackball, try Powerclick or
D-Buttons. The latter is on Info-Mac in the configuration section.

As far as the trackpad goes, while I don't prefer it, it can do some
pretty neat things like "tap lock" which is like holding the clicker down
on the mouse. OS 8 pretty much compensated for this by adding sticky
menus, however. But "drag lock" is another feature that is really nice
that is not duplicated elsewhere, you highlight an item by tapping and
then drag it wherever you want without holding down anything else and tap
to release. Desktop mice really should do this too.
