Sounds like your HD is going. Time to do a back-up.
When looking for a new HD for the 2400, you need to
look for a 2.5" wide and less than 12.5mm high. 
Personally, I like the IBM drives. They just seem to
last longer. YMMV.

Can you do the HD install? That depends how daring you
are. I did mine and it worked out. Its your risk. If
you have any dout then have someone (MCE) do it.
