Your tech is probably wrong, Ed.  As Sidney and I mentioned, there is a 
really good likelihood that the problem is an intermittant contact 
somewhere within the beast.  This could be with the power supply (the 
wires inside the little line we all take for granted as an AC adapter can 
be pulled from where they are soldered to the circuit board of the 
charger, or the RCA-like business end of the cord, or even break in the 
middle of the cord due to too much flexing (metal fatigue).  Any number 
of small circuit boards inside can work loose, as can framing supports 
and screws, making battery contacts open, etc.  Heck, this can even 
happen during shipping.
