I didn't include the detailed list of everything I'd tried due to its length,
but I've used just about every technique from Powerbook lore for a full reset,
including the one you note. I've even removed all power and shorted the leads
where the battery attaches to drain the capacitor it feeds. It's definitely
reset. :) I've also always had the problem you note holding the switch down,
and I usually temporarily attach a bit of plastic and tape to extend it a bit
when it's going to be needed a lot.

I have noticed this as well; unfortunately I've probably given it closer to
100 tries at this point. From the replies I've received, it looks like this
will be a motherboard replacement, ending up at around $500 Canadian if I
go the DT&T route. It also looks like this isn't that uncommon a failure for
both 2400 and 3400 models. Thanks to all the people who've replied so far.
