Just to complete the suggestions, my 2400 "died" last October after just 
30 days use. After numerous PM resets it ran off the AC adapter but not
the battery and it would not charge the battery. I too tried all the
power manager manipulations suggested and the dead battery possibility
and the bad AC adapter wire issue. All to no avail. I sent my 2400 to
Apple and its I/O power supply board had to be replaced. It took over 2
months of "waiting for parts" but at least it was under warranty.
