Dude,
Not in the mac world. A 300mgz G3 (read 2.3 years old) will run quake
3 at an exteremly high FPS. If you go out an buy a g4, you can expect it
to go obsolete. In three or four years. My 9 year old powerbook 170,
which i took to school every day last year, has lasted my extremely well.
I can hook it up to their laserprinters, go on the internet and check my
e-mail, and it never crashes. Unlike their troublesome pentium 333's.
And would you laugh at someone with a 333mgz wallstreet G3? I doubt it.
The thing is, in the PC world, yes it'll last a year. That's because
windows uses up every available resource you have. It sucks! THen you'll
have to upgrade, because all they do in the PC world is buy and upgrade,
and then for a good week or so you'll be able to run the latest version
of windblows. Then the new version of internet exploder will come out,
you'll try to install it, hoop your machine permanently, spend 600$ on
repairs, and then they'll tell you that you need everything upgraded.
In the mac world, we never had to deal with the first step. I was
able to upgrade my powerbook to os 7.1, then os 7.5.5, then os 7.6. My
powerbook is 1991, wheras os 7.6 is 1996. That's a five year difference.
Now i'll stop ranting before i go onto chapter 2. (=
    eric
