You might also check that either of the SCSI cable is not a dual purpose
cable - there are many made that offer two options, one for SCSI docking
which will result in the diamond, and another that would allow for SCSI
devices. Its unlikely if they are stock cables and therefore the ID is
proabaly the best bet.... make sure the scanner, the CD-ROM have unique
SCSI ID's.
