That said, I'd find it mildly useful as an optional feature (i.e. a 'public/private membership' flag for custom groups). One of my main reasons for not setting up a default view in the last year or two has been the lack of transparency - if people on my default view (and people not on it) could see their on/off status (if I'd ticked the 'make membership of this group visible' checkbox) then I might have made one.
