There shouldn't be memory concerns per se, though, should there? I
mean, the comments are all in the database and stay there. It's the
load that querying the database to put the inbox page together would
create that I would think might be the issue. Perhaps that could be
ameliorated with some kind of pagination, so that only X many
notifications/replies have to be called at a time.

don't go
