You're right that it was never finished, but it's not pretty easy. :) As far as I understand it, the reason that replies to your comments in other journals are not ESN-ified is because the table structure for ESN events does not actually support this case (i.e. three parameters--journal, commenter, and person being replied to). I have not actually looked at the code too much, so I may be wrong on the specifics, but back at 6A this was the reason I was given for why it never happened. Not that it's impossible to fix, of course, just that it's not straightforward.
