" Can communities really exist where people are really
different from one another?"

Maybe one formula would be : shared values, different expressions ... there
being values in common but a wide diversity of expression therefrom ...

homogeneity doesn't seem sustainable to me ... and the homogeneous vision
doesn't make much sense ... let's say we all became separatists on the basis
of our differences ... what happens when someone different is BORN into the
community : do they just ship them off to the appropriate colony where their
difference makes sense? If there's a community where only "natural" hair color
is acceptable, if a kid born into that community wants to color their hair
purple, are they going to ship the kid to a more radical commune? Or, more
likely, are they going to try to repress that kid's desire? Or if a teenage
girl falls in love with another girl in a community that prides itself on
being heterosexual, are they going to ship that girl off to a lesbian commune,
or are they more likely going to repress that difference? I don't think we're
going to be able to live in any situation for any length of time where we feel
repressed ... bottom line ...
