Hey I was thinking about this today! I was a city again (Sydney, then
drove to Melbourne) after a week out in the country and was struck
by all the people there. Their lives are so public yet so private. They
are very much exposed to being seen by other people, on trains, bus
stops, outside their front yard etc, in such a way that there is
no privacy out of doors. And yet, they pass like whatsits in the night
(damn my memory!). No communication or connection at a personal
level whatsoever. I guess that is why I admire so much interesting
characters that wander around chatting to random strangers.
