The saddest bit of it all is that while the standards support a standards update
transaction(868) for trading partners. The bulk of the vendors(Sterling, Innovis,
CommerceRoute, Spedi, GSX) do not support the transaction set fully enough to update
the standard on the map you are running. I have yet to find a Translator vendor that
fully supports this ANSI Code set with regards to ANSI's own updateable Standard sets.
If translation software companies would actually work on allowing this transaction and
supporting it with in their applications, my guess is that in the right hands little
or know purchasing of standards or even implemetation guides would be taking place.

Unfortunately, Those that rely on the standards have a view that only focuses on
KEEPING THEIR BUSINESS RUNNING rather than offering some trully open standard that
would allow for a real open exchange of information.

I guess when I look at it I would rather complain about noncompliant vendors than try
and complain about the cost of standards. Especially when the standards have provided
a FREE way to independently update standards transaction sets for atleast 5 years and
Vendors have not gotten on board. Besides, the standards costs are in line with most
major professional reference documents.

Just my two cents,

John

Earl, the price they are asking for gas at the pump is totally absurd;

absurd; these things are simple enough to manufacture once you have the
formula - should a generic manufacturer sell them before the patent runs
out without first obtaining a license? The price they are asking for
Windows XP and Office 2003 is totally absurd; wouldn't it make more
sense to buy a CD with the software from a street vendor?

Having said that, there could be an argument made for X12 to give away
the standards if it had a different business model. But X12 hasn't done
that, yet. So in the meantime, you have to buy the book, the CD, or
properly licensed software with the standards embedded within.

Besides, it's extremely likely that the "ordinary" EDI user could make
do without the X12 materials, as you'll rarely be called on to build EDI
messages entirely from scratch. Your larger trading partner will
generally supply EDI implementation guides that you can map from. Or
industry groups often provide their guides for free or nominal cost.

I understand that BUT:

The price they are asking is totally absurd.
They should put the specs on the Internet and make it a free download.
