What a fiasco. I would hate to be working at GXS now. I assume that
facility is a high 9s facility they are looking at availability of 92% for
this month. This is the second time I've heard of weather water flooding
causing a high availability data center outage, the other two one I've seen
is an accidental Halon release and air conditioner condensation water
leakage. From the tides of push and pull of data consolidation/segregation
looks like GXS consolidated their data in one location, but suffered to an
environmental risk. I think Sterling has a 'sterling' availability
record, only now of two system outages since they've been in business.
Wonder if GEIS is suffering contractually to customers with guaranteed
uptimes.

-Steve

GXS Client Services Notification Announcement
April 04, 2005
Issued at 12:30PM ET
Services Affected: Interchange Services, Service Center, Order
Lifecycle
Visibility and TradeWeb. This outage does not affect GXS EDI*Express
or
Tradanet systems, however, it does affect interconnect traffic.
Event Overview: At 3:30am ET Sunday morning, the primary storage area
network system that supports many of GXS' transaction messaging and
application services experienced a severe outage, caused by water
seepage
resulting from unusual high-winds, heavy rains and thunderstorms.
The
outage affected a portion of our Class-A SAS-70 hardened data center
located in Cleveland, Ohio. GXS engineering teams and support
personnel
from the storage area network equipment vendor immediately
coordinated
efforts working towards full problem resolution upon notification of
the
outage. All teams immediately began performing assessments, system
integrity maintenance and hardware replacement. GXS has been
coordinating with interconnect partners to ensure messages are queued
for
processing upon application restoration. The entire storage area
network
was powered down yesterday afternoon. Followed by a manual
inspection of
equipment several storage components were replaced. The systems were
powered back on through early morning today. Earlier this morning
EMC
discovered data corruption on certain disks requiring restoration of
data
from tape.
Event Update: In order to bring applications on line as
expeditiously as
possible, we will introduce applications in a sequential order. We
expect Interchange Services (ICS) to be operational by 12:00am,
midnight
tonight, followed by additional applications.
In order to ensure that we maximize application restoration, we did
enact
a contingency plan yesterday morning with our storage area network
vendor
and they are shipping an entire system as a back-up scenario.
Following resolution of this outage, GXS will provide a complete
event
synopsis and post-mortem, and will detail further preventive actions.
The next statement will be issued at 2:30PM ET.
For immediate inquiries, customers can contact GXS directly at
