I know that while we would keep only 3 months active on the translator, and available for immediate recall and reference, we kept the actual files archived for at least 7 years. These are the legal documents, equivalent in every way to paper purchase orders, change requests, invoices and payments. I know of at least 2 cases where major suits centered on the data in the EDI files, with millions at stake. I also know that some federal agencies want things kept beyond 7 years. If you make parts for the Department of Defense, for example, they may want records of purchases available for as long as that equipment is in the field. Likewise, if you make aircraft parts or parts for other industries that keep equipment for many years, they may want records available for many many years. I would guess that some on this forum still require trading partners to sign documents that outline their expectations.
