You are right disk storage is cheap. We just keep everything since our
inception to a Unix Translator (from mainframe) back in '97.
Since we are running on a Unix platform we keep our EDI data stored in an
EDI_archive for 6 months - in readable format.
When also wrote a script that will basically pack and tar each file by
month and store all these tar files into a EDI_ARCHIVE dir by year/month.
If we need to get a file for any reason....maybe Upper management wants
counts or audit wants to see
something particular etc. we will have the files. If disk space is not
feasible then you could always off load this to a
CD.

I don't know if there are legal requirements to save the original EDI data,
there may be in health care, and SOX may require it. But, even absent legal
requirements, the original EDI data ought to be kept for audit and dispute
resolution purposes. Some of my clients have customers who question
invoices which are over 1 year old, so I recommend keeping original EDI
data for at least that long. Disc storage is so cheap now that it is
foolish not to keep it around.
