Walter,

When it comes to encryption, you really have two options. You can either
encrypt the pipe, or encrypt the payload. What I mean by this is, you can
either encrypt the file, in which case it really doesn't matter how you send
the data. You can send in via email for all that matters; the data itself
is encrypted. Or you can encrypt the methodology by which the data is
transmitted (the pipe). In this case, the transmission and so is encrypted,
and the payload is not. Different trading partners, vendors, and vans,
offered different methodologies for either.

The most common method is to use PGP encryption two encrypted data, and then
a standard FTP client. There are a wide variety of vendors out there that
will sell you a client to encrypt your data using PGP or a derivative. Then
all you need is a client like WS-FTP for the ftp communication part. As an
alternative, and to make you aware, the most common approach to encrypt the
transmission is FTP/s (secure FTP), or VPN. There are a number of other
methodologies as well, including, AS1, AS2, and HTTP/s.

Your best bet is to have a conversation with your trading partner, and see
what they use. You are of course welcome to give me a call and I can give
you some direct advice. Although I work for a consulting company, I would
be more than happy to give you some recommendations and suggestions.

Thanks,
Pete

Subject: [EDI-L] EDI File Encrypting

What do people use and what is available for use in encrypting EDI
files prior to sending, especially to a VAN? If we start to use an
open FTP instead of an archaic asynchronous modem we'll need to
encrypt the data.
Are there any low-cost solutions out there for this?

Thanks.
Walter
