Well, we are trying to get away from the modem and phone line means 
of communicating with our van.  There are no security issues with 
the data transmission in this scenario - well, not that there aren't 
any but there are very few.

Our van offers open ftp for no charge but does not (or is unwilling 
to) allow us to encrypt the data before sending via open ftp because 
they don't have and don't want to support the key to decrypt it on 
their side.  Similarly they'd need to encrypt data and we'd need to 
decrypt it when we receive it.
Of course they do offer a secure ftp (SFTP) mode but the costs are 
just too high.
