AS2 is only expensive or complex if you want it to be. If you want it to be inexpensive and easy, invest in Softshare ECS. You get unlimited AS1, AS2, AS3, FTP, Secure FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, Web Services, SMTP/POP3, scheduling, logging, alerts, TP Management - all for about the same price as 3 AS2 seats added-on to base GIS. Add Delta Enterprise for about $6500 and you have yourself a complete top-shelf EDI system for the cost of a three cups-a-day Starbucks habit (including the gas to drive there).
