In the automotive industry it's typically in a REF*SN segment, although it's not often used. It's nice of you to be concerned about following the standards, but if the majority of your suppliers are already sending this data where you've asked for it, be aware it will be a burden, large or small, for them to change it (and for you to test it).

I almost hesitate to post this on a Friday, but I'll give it a shot... My company is the Buyer in the supply chain and we receive 856s from our suppliers. We are currently using 4010VICS for the X12 856 transaction. I have recently discovered that our mapping specs' requirement of our suppliers including the trailer/container seal number in TD309 is not necessarily "legal", as the standards state "NOT USED IN RETAIL INDUSTRY" (which is what we are in). I looked ahead to current standards to see if that restriction had possibly been reversed at some point in subsequent standards versions, but it doesn't look like it has. My question is where are others asking for/providing a seal number on the 856? [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ ...
