EDI Best practices dictate that you should never accept a transaction that uses CR, LF or CR/LF as a segment, element or sub-element delimiter. Considering this is a function of translator/trading partner set-up you can request that the trading partner changes the delimiters to something less likely to appear in the file for other purposes. Given a choice I like the printable characters ^ and | because they make the raw data easier to read.
