If the list and the newsgroup were separated, the list would be far simpler to administer. Most of the problems I have had with the list over the years have concerned the gateway between the list and newsgroup.

The downside of separating the two is that many of our most regular posters post to the newsgroup. They include Rich Ulrich, Art Kendall, Herman Rubin, Radford Neal, Duncan Murdoch, Thom Baguley, Glen Barnett, Robert Lundqvist, Aleks Jakulin, Paige Miller, Jerry Dallal, Eric Bohlman, and many others. (A few of these folks have have helped me out by subscribing to the list with a no-mail option. That is a way of partially addressing the problem, but some newsgroup readers are adamant about not subscribing to lists.)

That may not be a bad thing. The list has drifted from its original purpose, to discuss issues of teaching statistics. Making the list strictly registered people only for posting would very likely return it to a more educational orientation.

I think the list should be separated from the newsgroup. I've always thought this confusing and unusual. Newsgroups are dead, or a dead zone. I'll bet the newsgroup side is the source of the lion's share of the spam.

I wish I was in a position to offer a solution. That is, if I knew I would continue my current academic affiliation for more than the next year then I'd offer to host. Unfortunately, I'm not in that situation.

Someone needs to step up to the plate for at least the email list. The email list can be a functional entity. All email lists to which I belong have little to no spam. I may be fortunate, but that is the way it is.

The problem I would anticipate with that is that responders tend to be
"regulars", but most of the questions posed come from "first timers" or

Would it be possible to make the list available only to people who
have registered? I am on other lists that do this.
