Eric Scace K3NA has an article in the current issue of the National 
Contest Journal (Jan/Feb 2007, pp. 7-10.) about headphones for contesting.  
His contention is that the best headphone solution provides complete 
passive audio isolation from noises in the environment, with perfect, 
distortion-free audio from the radio.  What he determined worked best for
him were custom-molded in-ear monitors (such as the kind used by professional
concert musicians) and high-isolation, deep shelf industrial earmuffs.

     The custom-molded in-ear monitors are not cheap and not exactly what 
the original poster of this thread has in mind, I'm sure...
