To all who responded thanks! I was missing the M to V step. For some reason I thought you just hit the M1 or M2 key and it would pull the memory.
I have not tried it since all the replies but I am sure that will fix it. Thanks again. "A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over." If you have data stored in the normal memories 0-9, then tapping M>V followed by a tap of the appropriate button should retrieve the memory contents. If you want the 0-9 buttons to act like 'band select' buttons, then set the CONFIG: MEM 0-9 menu to BAND SEL and once settings are stored for any frequency in a band, those memories will return to the last used frequency, mode, antenna selection, filter selection on that band. You can also use the 0-9 buttons to store those memories. Set up VFO A and VFO B each with their modes and other settings. Then tap V>M followed by a tap to one of the 0-9 buttons. To retrieve, tap M>V folowed by a tap to one of the keypad 0-9 buttons. The M1-M4 buttons are similar, but are PER BAND. That means you must select the band first. Then you may store or retrieve the memory contents for each of the 4 buttons. Tap V>M, then tap the M1-M4 button to store. Tap M>V followed by one of the M1-M4 button to retrieve.
