Responses ranged from "I'd rather get rid of it" to "I like it, but I wouldn't complain if it went away." There was also a lovely tangent about Hoogle. Nobody was worried at that time that changing the syntax would drive away our existing user base. Maybe they were blinded by the fact that it's not that important.
