Me neither. Based on what I understand from the spec, it can affect
line breaking and semantics. If I get a chance I’ll look at this more
closely and follow‐up with the `LaTeXML` folks.

Somehow I never knew about this, but it makes sense. Following [your
notes] I can confirm they’re escaped correctly with `tex:verbatim` but
not with `MathJax`.
