That is sort of how I feel about Thunderbird, I never quite manage to make it completely comfortable.
I also think that an app that has sensible defaults, without obvious configuration options, is what gives an app "character". It shows that the developers have a strong opinion about how the application should be used and design it so that it does just that, and does it well.
