I'm proposing 100% customizable.

One of the possible sources would be "All mail" which would include all mail 
from every mailbox, ever.

But I don't even want to see hidden folders thing.

We could, however, have a smart set that is the negation of the contents of the 
union of the source list (except itself, if it happens to be there). More 
succinctly[1]:

  (All_mail - (Sources - Self))

That would take care of any hidden messages, without forcing a custom UI 
element.

Because I love general solutions.


[1] Actual expression likely to be much more complicated because we don't 
really want a self-referencing definition, instead, we're dealing with things 
in different abstraction levels, we want our set out of Sources before we 
actually compute Sources.
