I know. I read the entire archive before I posted. However, different angles
on the same idea and all. The IT POV is in small numbers here ;-)

AFP548 had a really nice series of articles on it. At its heart, it's an XML
file that allows you to set configurations/policies in a directory service.
While this has a bad rep, and somewhat deservedly so, it's also a real time
saver. For example, properly done, it means the first time a new user logs
in on a company machine via an Open Directory account, it means:

1) their account info is already set with their proper information for
names, etc.

2) if we have to change settings due to outside requirements, (screams at
sky for badly written laws. Oh yes SOX, I know you well my old enemy. I know
you well), we can do so once, and have them applied to all users quickly.

Basically, they're a way of managing preferences for applications on Macs on
networks. There's a really good article about creating them here:
