Specifically, most people are probably thinking of the ODB editor 
suite. [0] I'd eat my hat if Word supports it... That said, the ability 
to use an external editor is a huge feature for power users - not 
everyone likes to edit text in the same way. I (along with other crazy 
people) vastly prefer modal (vi) editing, and external editor support 
is the way to get it (+all of emacs, textmate etc.) without having to 
re-implement the wheel.
