IMAP tends to be bad about overloading words. The best description I heard
dates back to 1998, when they say "you normally subscribe to all your own
folders, but you don't have to"

The better versions in the enterprise space do. Gmail, not so much. Which is
why Gmail is such an awful IMAP target.
