I think you may be talking about different things when you say "plugin." From what has been said, Letters will have plugins be first-class parts of the app, and there will be a very large selection written by the people writing Letters. Plugins will not be the sort of neglected ghetto-feature that they are for Mail, nor, I think, the everyone-and-his-dog-has-written-one type of thing that the Mozilla apps have. They will be tightly integrated into the application, and often be written by the core-app programmers, which should keep them updated alongside the app quite nicely.
