Trash handling is one of the ickier parts of imap. There are four main ways
to deal with it, all kind of suck.

1) mark it as deleted and leave it there until the user purges. That's
'correct', but people tend to really, really hate it. It makes your inbox
look like rotting ass.

2) mark it as deleted and hide it from view, but it's still there until the
user purges. That one sucks for quotas, and leads to the
"but-i-deleted-it-no-you-really-didn't-you-have-to-purge-it" calls. Those
suck.

3) use a trash folder. What people expect more, but leads to issues with
multiple clients all using different folders, and of course, the
"but-i-deleted-it-no-you-really-didn't-you-have-to-empty-the-trash" calls.

4) instant delete. It's okay until a mistake is made. Then it's really,
really, bad. 

IMAP clients tend to have a large set of deletion options for this reason
alone.
